The Board of Trustees for the Timbuktu Manuscripts Trust currently comprises Dr E Pahad (Chairperson and Minister in the Presidency), Ms N Botha (Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture), Mr R Menell, Dr S Khoza, Ms M Slack, Mr T Sexwale, Mr A Thokan, Mr S Ebrahim, Mr A Mia, His Excellency Coulibaly (Ambassador of Mali in South Africa), Mr S Suleiman and Premier E Rasool (Western Cape). The Government of Mali is represented on the Board of Trustees by the Malian Ambassador in South Africa.
The Timbuktu Manuscripts Trust is administered by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and has been approved as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) in terms of section 30 of the Income Tax Act of 1962. Donations/ contributions to the Trust are exempt from donations tax in terms of section 56(1)(h) of the Income Tax Act and bequests or accruals from the estates of deceased persons in favour of the Trust are exempt from the payment of estate duty in terms of section 4(h) of the Estate Duty Act of 1955. The Trust has further received permission to conduct and carry out its activities outside the Republic of South Africa.
